MARTIN ROMUALDEZ: Worthy to be in the Senate
It was refreshing to read in
the newspapers that a political adversary of Mar Roxas acknowledged that Roxas
had risked his life in warning residents of Tacloban City of super typhoon
Yolanda. In making the remark showing his political maturity, Martin Romualdez
was quoted as saying that it was time to stop the blame game and move forward
by continuing the rebuilding programs in Yolanda-hit areas.
I am impressed that Dr.
Bernardo Villegas has gone out of his way to support Romualdez’ candidature for
senator, noting that Romualdez has the experience as a banker and a lawyer and
the track record as a Congressman of authoring legislation to help the poor and
the needy. Our biggest challenge is to achieve
robust and inclusive growth of the economy to eradicate poverty in the
Philippines.
Domini M. Torrevillas, in her
own opinion column, also endorsed Romualdez, noting foremost that he has the
credentials as president of Philippine Constitutional Association (an honor
society of jurists, lawyers and concerned citizens) which dedicates itself to
defending constitutional rule in our country.
Indeed, politics may soon pose a bigger challenge to the rule of law
because of the apparent mood of a significant segment of our electorate.
Their abovementioned observations,
with which I agree, give an insight to Romualdez’ character. Our voters,
hopefully, are beginning to realize the consequences of not voting candidates
of substance to public office and of the need not to be dictated by the
bandwagon mentality in making the hard choices of selecting the best candidates. This is why I will vote for Romualdez for
Senator.
